Acquapendente: the feast of the Madonna del Fiore and the Pugnaloni

THE TERRITORY OF THE BOLSENA LAKE MUSEUM SYSTEM

Pathways in the territory

Acquapendente and the surrounding territory belong to a wider geographical district, delimited by the outcrop of tuff stones and lavas erupted hundreds of thousands of years ago from the complex of the Vulsini Volcanoes. It is a large and articulate “unicum” of nature, culture, history, flavours and traditions. This district finds its unifying element in the wide and shining Bolsena Lake, surrounded by hills covered with olives which mark out the drainage basin. On the outer side, the hills extend towards the valleys of Paglia and Tiber north-east, to the plane of Viterbo and Mounts Cimini south-east, to the Tyrrhenian Sea south-west and to the Tuscan Maremma north-west. Grotte di Castro, Valentano, Gradoli, Ischia di Castro, Montefiascone, Bagnoregio, Bolsena, Farnese and Latera are, together with Acquapendente, the most interesting centres of the district, where the facilities of the Museum System are available. Apart from the Territory Museum of Bolsena, wider and more interdisciplinary, each town has a thematic museum tracing the local cultural identity, but also contributes to the knowledge of specific aspects of the territory and collects the most distinctive witnesses.
To this first group of towns we can add Proceno, Marta, Capodimonte and Castiglione in Teverina, other important villages of the territory where other thematic museums bound to aspects not yet developed are in preparation. They will soon complete the network of cultural offers of the System structures.
