PATHWAYS IN THE TERRITORY

The network of pathways of the Monte Rufeno Nature Reserve

  1. The Brigands’ Pathway
  2. The “White Roads”
White Roads is a project of the Museum of Flowers to make known a large area including part of Lazio, Umbria and Tuscany as well as the provinces of Viterbo, Terni, Perugia, Siena and Grosseto in an unconventional way. An area comprised in an ideal trapezium having as vertices the ancient city of Castro, Mount Amiata, Mount Cetona and Mount Peglia.
The project consists of a guide, to be published soon, which suggests and describes some ten ring-shaped itineraries of a length variable from 70 to 130 km, developed along road layouts coverable by car at low speed (mainly rural or municipal roads, the so called “white roads”). Each itinerary has a map, a description of the pathway and an account, including curiosities, of specific aspects of the territory connected with the layout (for instance the tenant farming, the volcanic lakes, the gullies, the “marriage” between vine and maple and so on).
The project is inspired by the well known “slow” philosophy. Driving slowly along the white roads we can let the window down, feel the uniqueness of the atmosphere of each place, hear the sounds and smell the scents.
We can stop with no fear to create traffic jams, to walk a little, to take pictures or to meet people who live and work there. We don’t need a Jeep or SUV, any car can fit. Driving slowly, even possible holes, mud or dust will not be a problem.

The itineraries of Tuscia Mirabilis (itineraries passing through the north of Tuscia in the Viterbo province).

  1. The Francigena Road
  2. The Calanchi Valley (Valley of the Gullies)
  3. Famous families of Tuscia
  4. The lake of the Etruscans.
